Why are listening and feedback skills so crucial in the workplace?
A training on listening and feedback helps create an open and trustworthy work environment where people feel heard and valued. When we truly know how to listen and give supportive feedback, our relationships at work grow stronger, and collaboration becomes smoother.
Giving and receiving feedback are fundamental skills that both leaders and team members should develop.Often, the problem isn’t that people don’t want to give feedback — it’s that they don’t know how, when, or where to do it in a way that’s helpful and motivating.
Why are listening and feedback skills so crucial in the workplace?
Various studies have shown that a strong culture of listening and feedback brings multiple benefits:
Improved job performance: When employees receive regular and constructive feedback, they gain a clearer understanding of their strengths and development areas. (Source: Gallup)
Increased employee satisfaction: Employees who feel heard and valued are more motivated and committed to their work.
Better leadership skills: Leaders who excel at listening and reflecting, create a culture of open communication, fostering greater innovation and collaboration within their teams.
Improve your listening and feedback skills right away. Here’s how to start:
💡 A 3-second pause
Many of us feel the urge to respond immediately, but taking a pause before answering can greatly improve listening and lead to calmer conversations. Wait about 3 seconds before replying. This helps you stay calm and gives you time to process what you've heard. It also allows the other person to add something important they might otherwise have left unsaid.
💡 SBI (Situation-Behavior-Impact) is an effective modelthat helps to give concrete and clear feedbackwithout sounding rude or defensive.
S (Situation) – Describe a specific situation
B (Behavior) – Talk about a specific behaviour
I (Impact) – Explain, what is the impact of this behaviour
"During the meeting, you gave a very thorough overview (situation). It helped us better understand customer feedback (behavior), enabling us to make quicker decisions (impact)." vs "You were very thorough in the meeting." (Too vague — it’s unclear why that’s good or bad)
Better Leaders, Stronger Teams
Clear and focused feedback helps employees learn faster, grow professionally, and stay focused on the right priorities. Leaders who know how to actively listen and manage feedback effectively build teams that work more efficiently and independently. When people feel heard and valued, they become more engaged and motivated to give their best.
Reduced Burnout Risk
Employees who rarely feel heard and who don’t receive constructive feedback are at greater risk of burnout. A strong culture of listening and feedback helps prevent mental exhaustion and improves the overall work environment.
Better Decisions, Fewer Conflicts
When employees feel their ideas are heard and taken seriously, they share more valuable suggestions. People who actively listen and express their thoughts openly yet constructively help reduce misunderstandings and foster a stronger sense of collaboration.
